Lillian

Lillian wears garden gloves
and canvas tennis shoes
And heavy coats with knitted scarves
not one but mostly two
And Lillian has hair of gray-
her eyes are silver blue.
Miss Lillian she’s a lot like me and you…

Lillian did house-hold chores
and made up people’s beds
She’d hurry home at half past dark
to keep her family fed
Then Lillian would kiss the kids
and listen as they’d pray
For quiet sleep and their souls to keep
while in their beds they lay.

Miss Lillian she’s a lot like me and you
Her wishes and her dreams
they didn’t all come true
It’s life that brought her down
and it’s life that gets her through
Miss Lillian she’s a lot like me and you.

Lillian walks through the park
for lunch that’s served at noon
And every night at half- past dark
she sleeps in that park too.
Then Lillian looks at the moon
and she begins to pray
For quiet sleep and her soul to keep
and a home where she can stay

If you see her on the street,
don’t look the other way
If you ask her how she feels,
this is what she’ll say
“Ain’t got no home, ain’t got no man
I’m all alone I’m all I am…”

Lillian wears plastic rings
and clothes that look like rags
She carries all her memories
inside two Kaufman bags.
Then Lillian looks past her shades
to ask if you will pray
For quiet sleep and her soul to keep
and a home where she can stay.

Miss Lillian she’s a lot like me and you
Her wishes and her dreams
they didn’t all come true
It’s life that brought her down
and it’s life that gets her through
Miss Lillian she’s a lot like me and you.
Lillian wears garden gloves
and canvas tennis shoes…
